Evaluating the safety and efficacy of the Adult PCV13 Vaccine

The Clinical Gap: Despite indirect protection from childhood immunisations and the use of older non-conjugated vaccines, pneumococcal disease remains a major, life-threatening danger to adults.
The Outcome: Through a comprehensive narrative review of the clinical literature, this project demonstrated that PCV13 is highly safe and triggers a significantly stronger immune response than older vaccines. Crucially, it established that administering PCV13 first primes the immune system for optimal, long-term protection against severe pneumonia and invasive infections.
The Impact: These findings delivered top-tier clinical impact. They were rapidly integrated into official, government-recognised medical guidelines within two years of publication, serving as a key evidence source in the National Immunisation Programme in the Netherlands.
