Beyond the skin: The autoimmune burden of atopic dermatitis

Our study, published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (JACI), set out to close a gap in dermatological care.

The Clinical Gap: While atopic dermatitis (AD) has long been linked to allergies, it was previously unknown if the condition or its severity increases a patient's risk of developing other autoimmune diseases.

The Outcome: Using real-world primary care data from the Oxford-Royal College of General Practitioners Research and Surveillance Centre (RCGP RSC), this study revealed that AD is more than skin-deep. Patients face a higher chance of developing other immune system diseases, especially when their skin condition is more severe.

The Impact: These findings were rapidly integrated into official medical policy, serving as a key evidence source in the 2023 German S3-Guideline for Atopic Dermatitis and earning a feature in the prestigious JACI Editor's Choice section.

We've summarised the key takeaway message below.

To bring this study to life and uncover the autoimmune risks associated with atopic dermatitis, Momentum Data provided end-to-end project support.

The findings were so critical that they were rapidly integrated into official, government-recognised medical guidelines within just two years of publication.

They now serve as a key evidence source in the 2023 German S3-Guideline for Atopic Dermatitis to inform clinical policy.

Our core contributions included:

  • Study Conception: Project conceptualisation and methodology

  • Data Analysis: Comprehensive large-scale analysis of real-world data

Data Visualisation: Clear presentation of complex clinical findings

    Medical Writing: Complete manuscript development

Publication Support: Targeted submission and review follow-up
